Queen Anne Colonial Craftsman
Project Overview
Set on Queen Anne Hill above downtown Seattle, this colonial craftsman home pays homage to Seattle’s history and to the development of the Bigelow neighborhood in particular. The area favored colonial revivals in the 1910s and craftsman style homes became popular on this street in the early 1920s. The addition of a proper English conservatory with copper roofing displays the owner’s unique twist to this historic treasure while dormers added to the roof turned an unusable attic into both a home office and a personal library or den.
Make your way up these stairs to see remodeling at its best. This previously asbestos-laden attic was completely unusable to its owner. JM Bogan took a space that had no options and gave it several. Upon entering the attic, one is greeted by hand-painted custom built-in cabinetry with granite counters, a new sink and an under-counter fridge. Just to the side of new railing awaits a conveniently placed personal bar. Off to the left a stunning home office is ready for use and to the right is the perfect spot for a library or den.
Think of attics and the words dark, cluttered, cramped and storage come to mind. This brilliantly remodeled space says nothing of the kind. Simply put, it is bright, spacious, inviting and comfortable. This may be the space you show off to guests, or maybe reserve as your own private haven.
Dormers built on the front side of the roof capture the home’s craftsman appeal and bathe the room in light. On the backside of the house deluxe roof windows provide beautiful views of the Cascade Mountains and look out east to historic Capitol Hill. Half and quarter round windows mirror each other on either side of the house and contribute to the opening up of the space in an elegant way.
The downstairs remodel is equally exciting as clean lines, granite counters, tile backsplash and flooring, and custom cherry cabinets create a signature craftsman kitchen with state-of-the-art Sub-zero Wolf appliances. A built-in refrigerator, dishwasher, and wine fridge are discreetly hidden behind beautifully finished panels, while a private desk nook and dual islands with a prep sink add additional convenience to an elegant kitchen.
The addition of this conservatory allows for a well-lit dining area directly off of the kitchen. The original exterior wall separates the two rooms, while expertly crafted entries with white molding create a natural flow and open space. French doors open onto a large wrapping deck that gives immediate access to the surrounding gardens and outdoor patio. A custom copper roof with a flat waterproof membrane adorns the top of this new conservatory, while colonial columns match the style of the home’s past.
